The House
Mill Hill is a fine Arts and Crafts home with many original features still intact, including plasterwork and woodwork by Ernest Gimson. It was Detmar Blow’s first commission, and subsequently enlarged by Alfred Powell. Built for Hugh Fairfax-Cholmeley, who was a local land owner, in accordance with his sociopolitical ideals. The original house revolved around one central living hall, with an estate office and integral stables. It was made into a much larger, more conventional Country House as a result of Fairfax-Cholmeley’s subsequent marriage. More recently a service wing was demolished and the current owners made further improvements under Martin Stancliffe.
The ground floor accommodation is well laid out, with four south facing reception rooms across the front and a kitchen with a back hall, overlooking the drive. There are four bedrooms with two bathrooms, one en suite, and a dressing room to the first floor, and two attic bedrooms with a bathroom and a further useful room to the second floor. In addition there are two additional attic rooms that could be converted to a number of uses.
In addition to the house is a one bedroom self contained flat. With its own front door it would make a very good home office or could be incorporated into the main house’s accommodation.
Outside
Mill Hill commands a fine, elevated position on the edge of the village and has wonderful, far reaching views. The impressive Arts and Crafts garden has a stone pergola, cobbled pathways and extensive yew topiary. There are well planned borders and many mature trees.
Below the garden is about 9.4 acres of grazing. In all the property extends to approximately 14.25 acres.
